The Laconia Project
The Co-op has been aggressively exploring the possible use of ash residue from the facility. The Co-op, Wheelabrator and the University of New Hampshire have been developing the use of ash as an aggregate in asphalt paving. To view UNH's page on this go to The Recycled Materials Resource Center. There is currently a federally supported demonstration project in Laconia. Finding a use for the ash will extend the life of the landfill, as well as keep disposal costs in check.
The procedures and processes developed in the ash demonstration project have been presented in papers in the US and abroad.
